Grower’s Assistant

 Leatherwood Farms is a small family run cut flower farm in Louisa County.  We produce over 50 varieties of flowers and foliage using sustainable farming practices.  We have been selling flowers through the River City Flower Exchange and  at the Westend Farmer’s Market in Richmond for five seasons and we are members of the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers.

 Leatherwood Farms is looking to hire a reliable, enthusiastic, hard-working person to assist on our flower farm on a part-time basis year round.  

The ideal applicant is:

·    Enthusiastic about local flowers

·    Positive, ask questions and follows instructions

·    Reliable and proactive/shares ideas and suggestions

·    Able to work independently with a task list

·    Enjoys working outside in all types of weather and getting dirty

·    Develop a knowledge of proper harvesting stage of a variety of flowers

·    Able to work quickly and efficiently, on a variety of tasks throughout the day

·    Enjoys manual labor and working with your hands

·    Farming/gardening experience (preferred, but not required)

·    Able to be on your feet, kneeling, bending for extended periods of time

·    Carry out repetitive tasks and lift heavy objects (40 pounds)

·    Able to commit for the entire season

·    Available to sell a few Saturday mornings at the farmer’s market is a plus

 

Duties include:

·    Soil/bed preparation for planting

·    Sowing and transplanting

·    Clearing out beds

·    Harvesting and prepping flowers for sale

·    Must enjoy weeding 😊

·    Watering

·    Use hand tools, some small equipment and machinery as needed

·    Carry out repetitive farm maintenance tasks

·    Other duties as assigned

Hourly position ranging from 16-24 hours a week, potential for increase in hours.   Pay commensurate with experience.
